The Fool
the joker & the queen, they said
but they forgot the fool . . .
the one whose face turned cherry red,
and never kept her cool.
the words she said never failed
to fall on stopped up ears,
like gentle breezes, these words, they sailed,
and confirmed her deepest fears.
“does he love, or love me not?”
the fool asks in deep dismay.
maybe, just maybe, this fool thought,
“he’ll love me again one day.”
at night she drifts back to the time
when all she felt was love . . .
when nothing held a punch nor rhyme,
when her heart soared like a dove.
the joker & the queen, they said
but they forgot the fool . . .
her eyes tonight are bleary red
she drowns in tears, a pool.
