Just Desserts

My mother says we ought to eat
A balanced diet, with whole wheat,

And don’t forget the chewy things:
Asparagus and squash with strings,

Or salmon for Omega Threes,
Or peaches, pears, and spinach leaves—

She always makes me clear my plate;
We even eat the stuff we hate.

Then out of nowhere come the pies—
She spoons whipped cream before our eyes!

“There’s cookies, too—I had a hunch
That you might like a midnight munch.”

While we are eating, in she walks
With ice cream, to complete our shock!

But Mother says, “Oh, now—be quiet.
You know we need a balanced diet.”
