Genesis

Psalm 139: 15 My frame was not hidden from You, when I was made in secret, and skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth

He said “let there be light”

And light hits a prism and splinters

Sets aglow planets of amethyst and opal

Pierces startled stars, blinking in brilliance,

drapes the moon in silver and plows an incandescent furrow

To earth. There through forest the light

Streams golden ribbons through trunks of trees,

chases through veins of leaves and

surges an emerald glow through canopies until

it reaches earth’s end and off the ocean beams.

The light cuts turquoise crest of waves,

Polishes pearl surf and, plunging beneath,

fractures into kaleidoscopic color of shimmering fish scales

but does not shrink

Until it reaches the earth’s center.

Finally, it pours liquid amber into skin

Flushes ruby cheeks and lips and fashions life

at the Creator’s command

far more precious than any gem.
